7. Black Mass - Benedict Cumberbatch
Rotten Tomatoes score: 75% Many people have lambasted Johnny Depp for the last few years, stating that his choice in roles has been poor and that he continuously falls back on the same acting quirks, whether he be a pirate, a vampire or a pirate vampire. Meanwhile, Depp sits on his private island and sips a Mojito while grinning because hes Johnny Depp. Black Mass is a return to fine form for Depp and, if you can look past his extremely distracting contact lenses, youll see that the man hasnt necessarily lost a step at all. Detailing the true story of Whitey Bulger, the notorious Irish criminal from South Boston who became an FBI informant and ended up a fugitive who spent 16 years on the run, Depp is equal parts charismatic and terrifying. Cumberbatch plays Billy Bulger, the brother to Whitey and a state senator who could never escape the shadow of his crooked sibling and was consistently glanced at sideways because of the relation. Although Billy was never implicated in any of his brothers crimes, their relationship was an intriguing one and Cumberbatch does well to breathe life into Billys struggles. You should see this if: you need a reminder that Johnny Depp is Johnny Depp for a reason and wish to see a true crime film that (thankfully) doesn't go out of its way to paint the infamous lead as overtly sympathetic.
