6. Chi-Raq - Samuel L. Jackson
Rotten Tomatoes score: 81% Ive always been extremely interested in gang culture and have known for a long while that Chicago was quickly establishing itself as the hub for gang violence in the U.S. (taking the title from an exhausted South Central or South L.A. as its now dubbed). When I heard that there were controversies surrounding a movie named Chi-Raq, directed by Spike Lee, I had surmised that its because the problems of this infamous city were finally being portrayed on the world stage. However, the controversy has stemmed from people arguing that the violence was being used a source of entertainment for a musical, completely unaware of what satire actually means. Based on a classical Greek play, the downtrodden women of Chicago decide that, in order for the gang violence to end, theyll withhold sex from the gangbanging men in their lives. Its an engaging premise and, although the trailer makes it seem extremely corny, looks like it will do the job of showing people that Chicago is in desperate need of an intervention (albeit in rhyme). With Samuel L. Jackson playing Dolmedes, Spike Lee may have made a "movie about black people for a white audience", but any political dialogue created by such a film is undeniably important. It still wont make me respect Nick Cannon as a rapper, though. You should see this if: you enjoy your director to present their political agendas with a dose of musical numbers and biting satire, making you uncomfortably laugh and sing along to a situation that is actually horrifying.
