19 Ultimate Final Shoot-Outs Of Cinema History
16. The Town (2010)
Ben Affleck turned a lot of heads when he co-wrote, starred and directed this impressive crime thriller, which balanced the authentic grime of Boston’s Southie territories with involving Hollywood stakes and drama. It’s an effective piece of work that is arguably the best he’s made so far - regardless of all the Oscars he took home for Argo.
It also contains one scorcher of a finale as anti-hero Affleck and his gang (including short-fused friend Jeremy Renner) see their daring heist botched as they're preparing a parking lot getaway. S.W.A.T. literally file out of the woodwork in what becomes a tense stand-off fuelled by heavy assault fire from both sides of the battle.
Affleck directs this set-piece with a visceral confidence but the true kicker remains the aftermath. Renner attempts a casual slip-away under the guise of a police uniform but Jon Hamm’s FBI man spots him a and the two viciously trade-off in the street with the criminal soon cornered.
Renner looks defeated but sees a half-filled soda coda on the ground and takes a hearty sip then readily jumps into certain death. It's an equally odd yet haunting instance, showing that a quiet human moment can steal a scene amidst impressive gunplay.
