20 Action Films From The 1990s You Must Watch
18. Face/Off (1997)
When John Woo was finally approached by studios in Hollywood to direct his own blockbuster, it resulted in Woo creating one of the most ambitious films of his career, starring both John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.
Face/Off sees Travolta play FBI agent Sean Archer, who loses his son after a failed assassination attempt by terrorist and sociopath Castor Troy, played by Cage. After hunting Troy for six years, Archer finally captures him, but Troy tells him that he has hidden a bomb somewhere, and the only people who know where it is are him and his brother Pollux.
With little chance of finding the bomb before it’s too late, Archer agrees to go along with an experimental procedure that will swap his face and voice with Troy’s, so that he can get close to Pollux and find out where the bomb is. But at the same time, Troy is broken free by his men, takes Archer’s face and plans to ruin his life.
The film earned critical praise for Woo’s creativity and the performances by Travolta and Cage. The film may not care much for realism, but it will certainly win you over with some impressive action sequences.
