20 Actors Who Just Gave Their Best Performance Ever

16. Nick Offerman - Sovereign

Life of Chuck Mark Hamill
Briarcliff

Nick Offerman is of course best known for playing Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation, but he's also proven his considerable dramatic range elsewhere, particularly on TV series Pam & Tommy and The Last of Us, even winning an Emmy for the latter.

But Offerman delivered his finest work to date in a low-key crime thriller you may well not have even heard of - Christian Swegal's terrific Sovereign.

In this based-on-true-events film, Offerman plays Jerry Kane, a man who identifies as a sovereign citizen - an anti-government activist who refuses to recognise the laws of the federal government, believing himself and his son Joe (Jacob Tremblay) to exist outside that system.

Though Offerman's Ron Swanson was distinctly anti-government, his portrayal of Jerry Kane is basically the polarity-reversed version - in no way comedic, often deeply unsettling, and ultimately devastatingly sad.

The brilliance of Offerman's performance, however, is that while we may vehemently disagree with Jerry's politics and actions, he still finds those kernels of sympathy.

Jerry never descends into parody even in his most monstrous moments, and while Swegal's film hasn't picked up much traction since being quietly released back in July, it's a dark ride well worth taking.
