20 Actors Who Just Gave Their Best Performance Ever
15. Dakota Johnson - Splitsville
Dakota Johnson has a rather unfair reputation online, that she's somewhat lacking as a dramatic performer, despite her impressive work in the likes of A Bigger Splash, Suspiria, Bad Times at the El Royale, The Peanut Butter Falcon, The Lost Daughter, Cha Cha Real Smooth, and Materialists.
But Johnson well and truly outdid herself in Michael Angelo Covino's ferociously entertaining new dark comedy Splitsville, which quite perfectly weaponises her typically laid-back acting mode to deliver a character whose relaxed demeanour belies her hidden vulnerabilities.
As Julie, a ceramicist who is in an open relationship with her husband Paul (Covino), Johnson is the easy MVP here, undeniably aided by this being some of the strongest material she's ever worked with.
For those who still believe Johnson isn't capable of deep dish character work, her knowing line readings and subtle glances do wonders here, perfectly elevating the wild screwball tone that filmmaker Covino is shooting for.
