Most decisions to turn down a role tend to be based on things like salary or scheduling conflicts: they're the kind you can't argue with (apart from if the salary demands are ridiculous). But when someone pulls a Sean Connery and just comically brushes away an opportunity without ever giving it due though, it's all the more baffling.

Such was the case with William Hurt, who was offered the role of Dr Grant after Harrison Ford also inexplicably turned it down. Not only did Hurt turn it down without reading the book source, he just dismissed the script without reading it.

Clearly he just didn't want to make a dino adventure movie, which sort of fits with his profile at the time. But that doesn't make his decision to ignore a ground-breaking, Oscar-winning film in favour of things like Mr Wonderful and Trial By Jury look any smarter.
