According to Steven Spielberg, Anchorman star Christina Applegate turned down an unnamed role in the first movie, drawing speculation on whether she could have been imagined as a younger Ellie Sattler (it tends to be easy to forget that Laura Dern was only 25 during filming).

Quite who Applegate was earmarked for seems contentious: by 1993 she was already 22 (despite playing a teen in 1991's Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead) so the suggestion that she could have played Lex would presumably have meant a change to the character's age. It would probably still have worked though, given her unfeasible knowledge of Unix.

Either way it didn't happen as Applegate flatly said no, preferring instead to take a break from big screen roles and stay content with Married With Children.
