Back in the early days of production, William Monahan was hired to write a script, which he finished in July 2003 and hadn't set it in a jungle. At that stage, Sam Neill was going to reprise his role, with filming set for California and Hawaii.

Other details of that version of the script are sparse, but British actress Keira Knightley - who had made Bend It Like Beckham in 2002 - said that she was in consideration for two separate roles (including an unnamed granddaughter - presumably not Lex grown-up as the time-line didn't fit).

The film continued to go through redevelopment throughout 2003, and Knightley's character was written out before the end of the year.
