5. Biggest Breakout Hit - Get Out

2017 Movie Awards 2
Universal Pictures

From one half of a sketch comedy duo to director of a Golden Globe (and potential Academy Award) nominee, Jordan Peele's feature debut was undoubtedly the year's biggest breakout hit.

A deft and unique blend of horror and social commentary that perfectly balanced the frights with plenty of laugh-out-loud humor all anchored by an awards-worthy lead performance from Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out instantly established Peele as one of the most exciting young talents in the business.

Made for just $4.5m, the movie captured the cultural zeitgeist and remained in the domestic top ten for an impressive ten weeks on its way to a box office total of $254.3m. Plenty of movies made more money last year, but Get Out proved that audiences still crave original projects if they're made with this much skill.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
