17. Biggest Waste Of Talent - The Last Face

2017 Movie Awards 2
Saban

You'd be forgiven for not even knowing that this movie existed. Originally selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2016, in the wake of poor reviews it was virtually abandoned and dumped onto video-on-demand over a year later in July 2017. An awards-baiting love story set against the backdrop of a Third World atrocity hardly seems like a good idea, but the amount of talent that The Last Face managed to attract is impressive nonetheless.

Two-time Academy Award winner and critically-acclaimed director Sean Penn was behind the camera with cinematography by Academy Award nominee Barry Ackroyd and editing by Academy Award nominee Jay Cassidy, with Academy Award winning actors Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem in the lead roles and music from Academy Award winning composer Hanz Zimmer. Get the point? Jean Reno was in it too.

Booed at Cannes, not even promoted theatrically never mind released in cinemas and boasting a 5% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 16 on Metacritic, The Last Face is one of those cynically-designed and self-important 'message' movies that tend to make a play during awards season until people actually watch it and realize it's total and utter sh*t.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
