6. Life Imitated Art In The TV Series Hotel (1983-1988)
Life imitated art over thirty years later when Anne Baxter replaced Bette Davis in a TV role.
The 1980s TV series "Hotel" featured Davis as Mrs Laura Trent, owner of San Francisco’s St Gregory Hotel. She appeared in the pilot episode and was set to be a recurring character but fell ill and was hospitalized. In a somewhat ironic twist, Anne Baxter was cast to replace Laura Trent’s character as Victoria Cobet. Within the series, she was the sister-in-law of Mrs Trent and took over the hotel business.
When Davis recovered, producers offered her the chance to resume her character. But after reading the script, she turned down the show altogether.
