10. Simon's Death Was An Accident - The Orphanage

The Orphanage is one of the most distinctive horror films of the 2010s and follows Laura (Belén Rueda), a mother whose young son Simón (Roger Príncep) mysteriously disappears.

Laura is led to believe that Simón has been kidnapped from the old orphanage the family is currently renovating, and six months later, he's still nowhere to be found. But the tragic truth is later revealed when the spirits of children who died at the orphanage lead Laura to a secret underground room containing Simón's corpse.

Laura then realises that Simon died the very night he disappeared, and it wasn't the fault of a nefarious outside party: it was entirely by accident.

Simon found the secret room, and Laura unknowingly blocked him inside it, and in his panicked attempt to escape, he fell and broke his neck.

It's an utterly heartbreaking revelation and one which helps further elevate The Orphanage far above so many other supernatural horror films about Creepy Kids.
