9. Giant Spider Outta Nowhere - Enemy
Last-minute twists don't get much more viscerally terrifying than that of Denis Villeneuve's Enemy.
The film is centered around a college professor, Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal), who discovers an actor, Anthony Claire, who appears to be his doppelgänger.
In the climax, Anthony is killed in a car crash along with Adam's girlfriend Mary (Mélanie Laurent), all while Adam assumes the identity of Anthony.
In Anthony's apartment, Adam talks to Anthony's wife Helen (Sarah Gadon), but when he enters the bedroom, she has suddenly transformed into a gigantic spider, which cowers in the corner as Adam looks on and sighs.
This is one of cinema's all-time most WTF twist endings, and while the precise meaning of it is absolutely up for debate, it's one of those closing reveals that gets just about everyone in the gut. No, we're probably not supposed to infer that Helen genuinely turned into a spider, but considering the widespread arachnid imagery throughout the film, there's certainly plenty to unpack.
