20 Amazing Movie Plot Twists That Never Get Talked About
15. Farrell Is Yuri - No Way Out
Though it was solidly successful at the time of its original 1987 release, you don't hear too many folk talk about the crime thriller No Way Out these days, despite it rocking one hell of a closing gut-punch.
The plot revolves around Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner), a U.S. Navy officer who is framed for the murder of his lover Susan Atwell (Sean Young) by the real culprit, Secretary of Defense David Brice (Gene Hackman), who additionally believes that Farrell is a KGB mole codenamed "Yuri."
In the climax, Farrell and Brice both have compromising information on one another, and so Brice agrees to frame his counsel, Scott Pritchard (Will Patton), as not only Susan's killer but also Yuri.
That's that, then, except the final twist of the knife is that Farrell is then revealed to actually be Yuri, a deep-installed mole raised in the U.S. from childhood for maximum infiltration potential.
This is an all-timer example of dangling the big twist right under the audience's nose - we as viewers simply don't ever consider that Farrell could be Yuri until the truth announces itself at the very end.
