2. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me was not well-received on its initial release. Even fans of Twin Peaks itself bashed it and to be fair, when watched in conjunction with the show, it could be a little unsatisfying. The cliffhanger that ended the show didn't get answered, the show's beloved protagonist Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) is barely in it (owing to MacLachlan's request for a small role) and most of the show's other characters are either off-screen or are just periphery characters in some scenes.
It's a bit of a weird follow-up but then again, it's David Lynch. What did you expect? Viewed as a standalone piece, Fire Walk with Me is actually quite brilliant.
An intense, haunting and achingly sad surrealist fever-dream that recounts the last week in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), whose murder was the inciting incident of the original show, Fire Walk with Me is a horror-tragedy that's as narratively strong as it is visually stunning, while Sheryl Lee gives a genuinely Oscar-worthy performance in the lead role. Furthermore, when freed from the shackles of TV censorship, Lynch created something much darker than the TV counterpart, with this movie delivering a frank depiction of sexual abuse that was shocking to viewers at the time and is still powerful today.
Simply put, Fire Walk with Me is one of the most underrated horror films ever made. It's time that it was acknowledged as the great piece of cinema it really is.
