14. City Slickers

For anyone who's sick of laddish and politically incorrect R-rated comedies, here's a great antidote: City Slickers.

In this one, three middle-aged friends (Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby) are navigating their mid-life crises and they end up going on a big trip together to rediscover their purpose in life. But rather than going on some big bender or whatever, they go for a Western-style cattle drive, helping get a herd of cattle from New Mexico to Colorado. What follows is an absolute blast.

City Slickers is a good-hearted, characterful and immensely enjoyable romp that mixes big laughs with a heartfelt story of these three troubled men finding their smiles again. Furthermore, the cast are excellent (even if Jack Palance's Best Supporting Actor win at the Oscars was a blatant career-win) and film buffs will greatly appreciate all of the references to classic Westerns,

It was a big hit at the time but seems less talked-about now, and it'd be wonderful were it to be rediscovered. Given that we're living in such a comedy drought at the moment, going back to any of these older comedy gems will be inevitably refreshing, and City Slickers is one that's well worth digging up.
