Marshmallow is a tough film to say too much about without giving the game away, so you're best advised to just go in and watch it as blindly as possible.

Though sold as a down-the-line slasher movie set at a summer camp - and haven't we all seen dozens of those? - Daniel DelPurgatorio's film takes some bold swings later on which, while not likely to hit for everyone, ensure it has far more on its mind than it initially appears.

With a compelling cast of young leads and a distinctive antagonist in the nightmarish Doctor, Marshmallow makes the most of its more conventional early-going before letting loose with a more subversive and unexpected third act that, above all else, is likely to get people talking.

Its hard left-turn won't be for all tastes, but nevertheless demonstrates a creativity that elevates Marshmallow far beyond its relatively by-the-numbers setup. Just another summer camp horror this ain't.
