Leigh Whannell's Upgrade absolutely rules - it's pretty much the Venom movie people actually wanted, and even stars Tom Hardy lookalike Logan Marshall-Green for good measure.

Though well received by critics, grossing almost six-times its budget at the box office, and ending on an incredibly sequel-friendly note, Upgrade 2 has sadly never come to fruition.

While Whannell was initially interested in a sequel, he cast doubt on it due to the film not being a bigger box office hit. Though Upgrade grossed $17 million on a mere $3 million budget, that doesn't account for the sizable costs of its global marketing spend.

Ultimately the sequel plans pivoted into a TV spin-off revolving around a new protagonist, but this too appears to have fallen apart.

And the final nail was hammered into the coffin last year while Whannell was promoting his new film Wolf Man, where he confirmed that he was happily leaving Upgrade alone as a one-off, no matter that so many fans would love to see its tantalising world explored in more detail.
