14. The Creatures - Bird Box
The concept at the heart of Bird Box is actually quite brilliant - Earth is invaded by a fleet of entities which can induce anyone who looks at them to kill themselves.
And to director Susanne Bier's credit, she commits fully to the bit of never showing them throughout the entire movie.
Though the original plan was to indeed reveal their grotesquely cherubic designs, Bier ultimately felt that the creatures looked silly, and in one of her cannier creative decisions left them entirely off-screen.
After all, even state-of-the-art effects are no match for what the audience's mind can conjure up, and so the implied presence of these creatures results in the film's most chilling moments.
It's just a shame that everything surrounding the entities is... kind of a bore? A top-drawer cast is squandered on a thoroughly generic romp that can't sustain tension or even basic interest across its overlong 124-minute runtime.
2023's spin-off Bird Box Barcelona wasn't up to much either, but at least it had the restraint to also keep the creatures unseen.
