Director Sion Sono is the Bong Joon-ho of J-Horror; he makes weird, original movies that reflect a blend of many different tones and genres. He's turned out some very interesting work over the years, but Exte might be his finest to date.

Exte, despite its ridiculous premise, is a horror comedy gem. It's inventive, grotesque, suspenseful, visually stunning and yet, just like all the best horror comedies do, it manages to inject genuine heart into proceedings too. It's bonkers as hell, but in the best possible way and makes for a viewing experience that's somehow both disturbing and delightful at the same time.

Exte is highly tense and involving, although due to its lack of traditional scares it certainly isn't the scariest J-Horror film of the noughties. Still, it's one of the best.
