20 Awesome J-Horror Movies Every Horror Fan Should See

13. Kuroneko

Kuroneko Horror
Toho

Plot: The vengeful spirits of two women who were raped and murdered by samurai begin seducing and murdering passing warriors.

This ghost story by Kaneto Shindo might not be quite as good as an earlier one he did (more on that later) but Kuroneko is nonetheless another smashing early J-Horror movie.

With its atmospheric cinematography, thoughtful narrative and a mixture of eerie spooks and a romantic vibe, Kuroneko is an irresistible, always compelling ghost story that prioritises mood and character over scares to great effect.

As is a common problem with horror films from all over the world, the final act sees the film lose some momentum but that doesn't take away too much from what is a remarkably strong effort overall.
