17. The Long Walk
The Long Walk is an incredibly impressive adaptation of Stephen King's famously tricky-to-adapt dystopian novel - one that benefits immensely from a stellar ensemble cast and director Francis Lawrence's unflinchingly visceral approach to violence throughout.
As terrifically crafted as it is from top to bottom, though, The Long Walk is a tough ride, because to the surprise of few, watching 50 young men meet a grim end, typically at the end of a soldier's gun, isn't all that entertaining.
In an era where the gun violence epidemic in the U.S. only continues to grow as those in charge do little to curb it, nobody could be blamed for having little desire to revisit a film so rife with the systematic killing of young men.
Hell, the script itself was gruelling enough that Mark Hamill almost turned down the role of The Major, before being persuaded to star by director Lawrence.
Overall The Long Walk is one of the better King adaptations of recent years, if not ever frankly, yet also paradoxically a one-and-done viewing for many.
