20 Best Films Of 2017 (So Far)

18. The Lost City Of Z

The Lost City Of Z Charlie Hunnam
Amazon Studios

Given how terribly it did at the box office - and the subsequent dismal performance of the Charlie Hunnam-starring King Arthur - it would probably be all-too-easy to dismiss The Lost City Of Z entirely, but that would be a huge disservice to it.

The film is actually beautifully shot and the drama is almost intoxicating, with Hunnam on far better form than he's ever been (particularly as Arthur). There's definitely a touch of Apocalypse Now in there (and of course Heart Of Darkness) and there's a lot to be said of its impressive balance of intensity, drama and disarmingly humorous moments.

And balance is really the key - somehow, James Gray manages to keep a number of balls in the air, with surprisingly tender nuance sitting alongside occasionally harrowing scenes of adversity.

It definitely deserves a second look, which might actually earn it the plaudits it deserves.
