Hollywood has always shown a fervent passion for the most British of films - the work of Richard Curtis for instance, or the Bridget Jones movies. But despite how charming they can be (particularly Bridget Jones' Baby), they have a sort of manufactured Britishness about them that doesn't quite ring true.

That can't be said of Their Finest, which is an incredibly British film and which features arguably career best work from Gemma Arterton and Sam Claflin, while Bill Nighy is as typically excellent as he always is away from vulgar blockbusters.

There's a lot of depth in this story of morale-boosting wartime film-making, and an unexpected, emotional twist that veers it away from predictable waters. And it stands as an important monument to history and to feminism, sitting alongside Hidden Figures in that respect.
