20 Best Films Of 2017 (So Far)
16. Split
It's been way too long since M Night Shyamalan fans have been waiting for the twist-loving director to make his big return to form, and mercifully it has now happened.
Though Split was largely over-shadowed by the beautiful twist at the end that linked it to Unbreakable and the forthcoming sequel tying them both together, it is still a great film in its own right. It is visceral and built on an impressive drive to thrill that feels far more refined than Shyamalan's last The Visit.
It really works thanks to the commanding work of James McAvoy, who has rarely been better and gets a chance to really have fun with his rainbow of characters thanks to a very good script. This is definitely the same Shyamalan who made those excellent early movies, and long may he stick around.
