20 Best Horror Movies Of 2021

18. Last Night In Soho

The Night House
Universal

Last Night in Soho may not be up there with Edgar Wright's very best films, and its indictment of the sexist Swinging Sixties gets no points for subtlety, but as a rare horror film centered around the dangers of nostalgia, it strikes a singularly unnerving chord.

Beautifully shot and terrifically acted by leads Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy, Wright's latest enthusiastically tips its hat to the style and tropes of the Italian giallo horror genre while weaving a uniquely deranged spin on Alice in Wonderland.

If you can forgive some third act missteps, this is a supremely atmospheric horror quite unlike anything else released this year, topped with the typically superb musical choices and pin-sharp editing expected from any Wright joint.

The late Diana Rigg also appears in a small but memorable final role that offers a fitting full stop to a storied career.
