Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig first collaborated with each other on Frances Ha, a wonderful free-wheeling comedy which captured the hectic nature of life in New York. Mistress America reunites director and star in another great comedy in which Gerwig solidifies her comedic credentials. Gerwig plays go-getter Brooke, who hooks up with her sister in law-to-be Tracy Fishko (Lola Kirke) and draws her into her life with her unflappable optimism and complete inability to see failure on the horizon in spite of all the warning signs. It's a charming and frequently funny film, clearly tailor made to showcase Gerwig at her best. While many similar collaborations between directing and acting couples often come across as vanity projects, the talent involved here allows Mistress America to transcend these potential pitfalls - the two deliver a solidly written, perfectly paced screwball comedy which confirms them as leading talents in the New York filmmaking fraternity.
