While many CGI animated movies released since the technology arrived on the movie scene certainly look great, it's rare that filmmakers using the technique strive to craft something with a more unique and singular visual style.
Andrew Stanton is one such director who isn't afraid to break away from the slick but safe approach to CG animated movies, and WALL-E is the apotheosis of his unique cinematic vision.
The vast garbage dump he depicts a future Earth as is far removed from the bright and colourful landscapes of your average Shrek or Kung Fu Panda film, but in its way far more impressive in scope and conception to look at. Likewise the outer space vistas are almost ethereal in their sense of scope.
Pixar also manage to explore some far more serious-minded topics than usually found in a family friendly film without becoming preachy or didactic, and the concepts of human waste, laziness and greed sit underneath the simple story of a sentient robot finding its purpose without bogging the film down in on-the-nose messaging.
