18. Rob Hall - Everest

Veteran Everest climber Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) reaches the end of his road, realising that he won't be saved from the deadly storm. He radios through to base camp manager Helen (Emily Watson), who in turn calls his pregnant wife, Jan (Keira Knightley). Jan makes an attempt to motivate Rob to get moving, but he knows that he's dying and simply suggests that she name their child Sarah. She tells him that she loves him, after which the elements have claimed Rob, and he offers no response. It's an extremely surprising moment because it avoids the clichéd sentimentality many audiences were expecting: he doesn't get a soppy final speech, he just disappears in a flash and it's so much more poignant as a result. The fact that it's based on a true story makes this all the more important and admirable that it was so respectful.
