12. Hacksaw Ridge – First Battle Scene

Arrival Amy Adams
Summit Entertainment

If you thought the famous Omaha Beach landing scene from Saving Private Ryan was brutal and gory, then the unflinchingly horrific and realistic battle scenes from Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge might just be the end of you. Set during World War II, the film focuses on real-life pacifist and combat medic Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) as he is sent off to serve in the Battle of Okinawa in Japan where he went on to save the lives of 75 soldiers in what has come to be known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War.

As Doss and his fellow soldiers first head over the titular ridge to battle, the horrific realities of war are truly revealed to both characters and audience. A charred wasteland littered with dead and dying soldiers greets them like hell on earth and their terror and feeling of ‘WTF am I doing here’ is palpable. Gory and harrowing as it is, it’s about as an effective anti-war scene as you can get.
