8. Star Trek Beyond – Beastie Boys Space Battle

Arrival Amy Adams
Paramount

It’s safe to say that Star Trek reboot director and producer J. J. Abrams is a Beastie Boys fan. In the first movie, we saw a rebellious teenage Kirk steal his stepfather’s vintage car to the tune of Sabotage and in Star Trek into Darkness an older Kirk has an alien threesome with Fatboy Slim’s remix of Body Movin’ playing in the background. Star Trek Beyond again uses the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage, except this time set to a blistering space battle scene in which the song literally helps save the day.

After learning they can destroy enemy Krall’s communications with his swarm ships by disrupting the frequency with something ‘loud and distracting’, the Starfleet crew decide to blast the ‘classical’ song Sabotage. It’s a great reference to Kirk’s car-stealing youthful antics and comforting to know that the Beastie Boys are still being blasted in moments of angst some two hundred years into the future. Altogether now, ‘IIIIIIIIIIIII CAN’T STAND IT, I KNOW YOU PLANNED IT’ …
