20 Best Movie Performances Of 2019

19. Eddie Murphy - Dolemite Is My Name

Everybody loves a comeback, and nobody mounted a more impressive one this year than Eddie Murphy, who played cult filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore to perfection in the brilliant Netflix film Dolemite Is My Name.

Following a string of flop comedy vehicles, Murphy has spent the better part of the last decade in the shadows, so to see him return with such a vibrant, effervescent performance was truly heart-warming.

Think of the film as the more irreverent cousin of The Disaster Artist - a movie about a man committed to bringing his vision to the screen regardless of what others think.

The result is an intensely charming film, and that's largely down to Murphy - not to ignore Wesley Snipes, who is also fantastic here - aptly reminding everyone how his lightning-quick wit made him so damn popular in the first place.
