17. Sing Street

10 Cloverfield Lane
The Weinstein Company

John Carney’s feel-good musical Sing Street flew largely under the radar this year, which is a shame because the Dublin-set dramedy about a young lad who forms a band to impress a girl is a treat whether you’re a fan of nostalgic 1980s pop culture or not.

The neo-pop art inspired poster that accompanied the movie is instantly evocative of its decade’s setting, featuring star Ferdia Walsh-Peelo looking like a young Robert Smith and co-star Lucy Boynton in typical 1980s garb.
