4. Atomic Blonde – Stairway Fight
David Leitch’s adaptation of Antony Johnston’s graphic novel
The Coldest City stars Charlize Theron as Cold War era top-level MI6 spy
Lorraine Broughton who is sent on a dangerous mission to Berlin on the eve of
the fall of the Berlin Wall. Thoroughly entertaining and blisteringly violent
with brilliantly choregraphed fight sequences and a director in common, it’s
not surprising Atomic Blonde has been dubbed the female John Wick.
In its best combat scene, we see Lorraine take on a couple of KGB brutes in the dingy stairwell of a rundown East Berlin apartment block. Atomic Blonde’s quintessentially 80s soundtrack cuts out leaving just the brutal sound of fists on flesh and bones crunching on floor as they throw punch after kick and toss each other down the stairs.
While its tough watching a woman getting beaten up by two guys, Lorraine more than holds her own against the two henchmen. She’s tough but not invincible, however, and soon enough all three are bruised and bloody but Lorraine gets the upper hand eventually leaving two dead Russians in a crumpled mess on the stairs.
