Jason Reitman makes a major return to form with this terrifically-scripted and superbly-acted tribute to the pains of motherhood.

Reunited with frequent screenwriting collaborator Diablo Cidy (Juno, Young Adult), Reitman delivers his most emotionally honest movie in years, largely thanks to Charlize Theron's astonishing, Oscar-worthy central performance.

There will be those with misgivings about Tully's unnecessary third-act plot twist, but as a statement about the physical, emotional and spiritual turmoil overworked mothers have to suffer through, it's nothing if not incredibly effective.

Theron's sublime work is of course propped up by a cracking ensemble, especially Mackenzie Davis and Ron Livingston, who help create a well-rounded and empathetic portrayal of what motherhood looks like in 2018.
