11. Calibre

Calibre Jack Lowden
Netflix

This Scotland-set thriller may have been recently dumped on Netflix without any fanfare at all, but don't let that fool you.

Matt Palmer's feature debut as writer-director is an at-times agonisingly suspenseful film as it follows two young men (Jack Lowden and Martin McCann) trying to keep their cool in the middle of a hunting trip gone disastrously wrong.

That's all you need to know about the premise, honestly, because Calibre is best watched knowing as little as possible. Simply be aware that it makes fantastically ominous use of its Scottish Highlands setting, is terrifically acted across the board, and mines incredible amounts of tension out of its low-key set-up.

What it lacks in graphic, grisly detail it more than compensates with stomach-knotting unease, making this an uncommonly effective low-budget thriller you absolutely shouldn't sleep on.
