15. A Star Is Born

A Star is Born is a remarkable case of an incredibly overdone concept being reworked in order to feel fresh and punchy once again.

Bradley Cooper's storming directorial debut is one of the most evocative of the last few years, making almost all the right choices while proving himself a natural actors' director (which being an actor himself makes a lot of sense).

The star of the show is naturally a sure-to-be-Oscar-nominated Lady Gaga, but Cooper isn't far behind with similarly affecting work, while Sam Elliott gives an awards-worthy supporting turn, and there's even a neat, small role in there for Dave Chappelle of all people.

Whatever your musical tastes, there's a real dramatic, visceral thrust to the songs here, elevating the already searing material to tear-jerking new heights.

But the tears are entirely earned, and this is a rarest of remakes that lives up to the original while successfully reinterpreting it for a new generation.
