20 Best Movies Of 2019

8. Us

Jordan Peele Us Publicity Still
Blumhouse

On the back of Get Out, there were always going to be major expectations attached to Jordan Peele's sophomore effort, Us and it was never going to live up to the hype. But the fact that it managed to be one of the best horror movies (with obvious generic caveats attached) and one of the most interesting films of any genre of the year is seriously impressive.

The film takes what is a pretty simple set-up - a family tormented by evil doppelgangers of themselves - but in terms of subtext and the detail Peele puts into his story-telling (much of which is only revealed on subsequent watches), Us is hugely ambitious. It doesn't care for your expectations on genre and there is so much confidence in Peele's film-making that once again it's hard not to be hugely excited by what he'll be doing next.
