9. Relic

I'm Thinking of Ending Things
IFC Midnight

Natalie Erika James' directorial debut Relic follows in the footsteps of Ari Aster's Hereditary, taking an incredibly personal, upsetting premise and focusing more on human anguish than supernatural nonsense.

Robyn Nevin is incredible as Edna, an elderly woman suffering with dementia, while Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote are terrific as her daughter and granddaughter respectively.

Largely bereft of jump scares and keen instead to quietly unsettle, Relic is a horror film of a wholly different order - terrifying in how suddenly a human being can slip from sight even while they're still alive.

Few are likely to forget the film's harrowing, oddly beautiful final sequence in particular.
