Antonio Campos' adaptation of Donald Ray Pollock's novel is almost impossibly bleak throughout, filled with murder, death, and sexual abuse.

It's also one of 2020's most well-wrought films for those prepared to stomach it, a searing, southern fried revenge parable bolstered by its incredible ensemble cast, including Tom Holland, Bill SkarsgÄrd, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke, Sebastian Stan, Haley Bennett, Mia Wasikowska, and Robert Pattinson.

Campos does a fantastic job immersing the audience in this podunk town with a seriously seedy underbelly, and though truly likeable characters are in desperately short supply, there's a compulsively watchable quality to the deliriously lurid drama.

It's definitely not for everyone, but for those craving an epic, icky revenge story, this is one of the year's most richly, deeply felt.
