The latest film from Irish animation outfit Cartoon Saloon (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner) is their best effort to date - a gorgeous, conceptually refreshing spin on Celtic mythology sure to warm the hearts of anyone who takes a chance on it.

If on the surface Wolfwalkers might seem to offer up familiar messages about accepting those with differences and co-operating with "the other," this tale of a young English girl's friendship with a shapeshifter is elevated significantly by its earnest tone, immaculate musical score, and stunning animation.

There were bigger animated films in 2020, but ones which ignited the imagination quite this excitedly? Not a chance.
