7. Saint Maud

I'm Thinking of Ending Things
StudioCanal

One of the most astonishing and unforgettable directorial debuts in recent years, Rose Glass' Saint Maud is both a terrifying horror film and an expertly crafted, sublimely performed character piece.

Morfydd Clark is outstanding as Maud, a palliative care nurse and devout Roman Catholic whose faith leads her down an increasingly worrying path - and the less said about that, the better.

Indeed, this is another film best watched while knowing little, because it frequently defies expectations throughout its lithe 83-minute runtime, aided by Clark's oft-ambiguous, ever-unsettling performance.

Beautifully filmed and boasting one of the most jaw-dropping final scenes of the year, Saint Maud immediately earmarks Glass as a major talent to watch moving forward.
