20 Best Movies Of 2020
6. The Trial Of The Chicago 7
Aaron Sorkin's courtroom drama might be the most strictly crowd-pleasing film of 2020 - a comfortingly old-fashioned film nevertheless girded by its whiplash-inducing dialogue and robust ensemble cast.
Beyond being an important legal case well worth documenting - that is, a group of anti–Vietnam War protesters charged with conspiring to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention - Sorkin's film overflows with wit and charm at every turn.
Picking out highlights of the cast isn't easy, though Mark Rylance is fantastic as slow-boiling defense lawyer William Kunstler, and Frank Langella delivers his best performance in years as the maddeningly incompetent Judge Julius Hoffman.
But the real star of the show must surely be Alan Baumgarten, who edits the film with a frankly superhuman level of precision.
