17. Run
Aneesh Chaganty's follow-up to his much-loved thriller Searching is a more conventionally-styled film, but also an expertly executed, tightly-wound slice of modern-day Hitchcock.
Sarah Paulson is fantastically chilly as Diane, an overprotective mother who has a couple of secrets up her sleeve where her fawning treatment of her wheelchair-bound daughter Chloe (Kiera Allen) is concerned.
Dripping with suspense, gorgeously shot for maximum unease, and immaculately performed by both Paulson and Allen, Run takes familiar parts yet subverts expectations just enough to deliver an end product that feels fresh and urgent.
Like Black Bear, you're better off going in without watching the trailer or reading too much at all, because it'll make the wild ride all the more exhilarating.
If nothing else, it'll leave you eager to see what Chaganty cooks up next.
