There haven't been many more topical movies released this year (so far) than Emergency, a tricky black comedy in which three non-white college students must decide what to do after finding a young white woman passed out in their living room.

Carey Williams' provocative and challenging genre-hopping film asks audiences to consider the constant calculations people of colour are forced to make in any given social situation - the lack of which is undeniably taken for granted by most white people.

The crux of the film's drama revolves around the students' unwillingness to report the incident to the police for fear of racial profiling, as kickstarts a wild, often perversely hilarious sequence of events.

With a tone that effortlessly slinks between pressing commentary about contemporary America and gut-busting social satire, Emergency makes the absolute most of its terrific concept while teasing superb performances out of its central trio, RJ Cyler, Donald Elise Watkins, and Sebastian Chacon.
