Ti West's new horror film X is one of the genre's most unforgettable efforts this year - a delirious homage to classic, grimy exploitation flicks like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, albeit one that also forges its own scuzzy identity.

The simplicity of the slasher movie setup - not to mention the graphic violence and gratuitous nudity on offer - belies West's more nuanced engagement with themes re: sexuality and repression, as well as the superb central dual-performance from Mia Goth.

Slow-building to a carnival of carnage and deeply offputting weirdness, X is a film that takes a while to show its true colours, but the outcome is far from a typical slasher flick all while expertly crafted by West in his finest effort to date.
