Robert Eggers is confidently three-for-three with The Northman - a toweringly ambitious Viking revenge epic that's easily one of the boldest and most visually striking films of the year.

Alexander Skarsgård was basically born to play the role of Viking warrior prince Amleth, while Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, and Claes Bang lend terrific support.

Brutal but beautifully staged, The Northman is an uncompromising, powerful plunge into historical legend that confirms Eggers to be one of the most imaginative stylists of his generation.

Sadly audiences didn't turn up to support it on theatrical release, though, so it sank like a stone at the box office, and will likely prevent Eggers from getting a budget of this size again anytime soon.

One suspects time will be incredibly kind to it, though.
