20 Best Movies Of 2022
7. Aftersun
One of the most impressive filmmaker debuts in recent years, Aftersun is a staggering dramatic achievement from writer-director Charlotte Wells.
Wells' film is an effortlessly moving father-daughter drama focused on a late' 90s holiday shared by 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) and her father Calum (Paul Mescal).
Wells does a magnificent job of implying so much through glances, single tearful glimpses, and brief windows into the future, yet keeps enough of the central scenario ambiguous enough that audiences are free to draw their own conclusions.
Newcomer Frankie Corio is magnificent as Sophie, but it's Mescal's soulful performance as her depressed father that takes this to the next level.
Wells' visual creativity, cutting between different video mediums and time periods in a flash, only enhances the film's emotional power, especially in its tender final stretch.
