The year's most talked about film, Barbie is a wonderous feat of imagination and daring more than deserving of the vast acclaim and popularity it has secured since its release. No one knew what to expect from Greta Gerwig's vision, but we never should have doubted she'd deliver, and deliver she did.

In a script co-written by husband Noah Baumbach, Gerwig's colourful, timely comedy follows a Barbie (Margot Robbie) who escapes from Barbieland after her seemingly perfect existence is uprooted by questions of mortality. The adventure that follows is as uproariously funny as it is socially conscious and unflinching.

Joined by a show-stopping, light-footed Ryan Gosling, Gerwig's descent into the complexities of gender discrimination and a world far messier than expected makes for a brilliantly fun, briefly heartbreaking time, full of startling dramatic beats, iconic musical numbers and impressively vibrant set pieces.
